I asked the students what they do with their pumpkins once Halloween is over? They all basically shrugged their shoulders, gave me a weird look and said they threw them away, or whatever.<\/p>\n<p>Enter story about how you can peel, cut up and cook the pumpkin and turn it into something yummy. Again, the weird looks. Next Question: Who likes pumpkin pie?All their hands shot up into the air. &#8220;Well, where do you think the pumpkin comes from?&#8221; Realization sinks in.<\/p>\n<p>In honour of our trip to the pumpkin patch and their new found knowledge that you can cook with pumpkin I have been baking up pumpkin-inspired treats for them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1512\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1512\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/aysontespli.ca\/?attachment_id=1512\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1512\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1512\" title=\"Pumpkin Spice Scones\" src=\"http:\/\/aysontespli.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pumpkin-Spice-Scones-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Pumpkin Spice Scones\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/aysontespli.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pumpkin-Spice-Scones-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/aysontespli.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pumpkin-Spice-Scones.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pumpkin Spice Scones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>4 cups Flour<br \/>\n1 1\/2 cups Sugar<br \/>\n2 Tablespoons Baking Powder<br \/>\n1 teaspoon Salt<br \/>\n1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon<br \/>\n3\/4 teaspoon each: Ground Nutmeg, Ginger and Cloves<br \/>\n1 cup Pumpkin Puree (unsweetened canned pumpkin)<br \/>\n3 ounces of Half&amp;Half (Cream)<br \/>\n1 1\/2 teaspoons Vanilla<br \/>\n2 large Eggs, lightly beaten<br \/>\n6 ounces cold Butter, cubed<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Glaze<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n1\/2 cup Icing Sugar<br \/>\n1 Tablespoon Milk<br \/>\nsplash of Vanilla<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Spiced Icing<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n1\/2 cup Icing Sugar<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon Cinnamon<br \/>\npinch each of Nutmeg, Ginger and Cloves<br \/>\nMilk, to right consistency<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 425F.<br \/>\nLine baking trays with parchment paper or lightly spray with vegetable oil spray and dust lightly with cornmeal.<br \/>\nIn Kitchenaid mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger; stir, on lowest setting for about 1 minute.<br \/>\nWhile that is stirring, combine pumpkin, cream and eggs in a large measuring cup.<br \/>\nPour cubed butter into combined flour and stir on low speed until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (If not using a mixer, cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender)<br \/>\nPour in pumpkin mixture and stir just until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.<br \/>\nTurn the sticky dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead about 10 times.<br \/>\nGENTLY roll out dough to about 3\/4 inch (2 cm) thickness and cut with floured biscuit cutter.<br \/>\nPlace close, but not touching, together on prepared baking sheets.<br \/>\nBake for 14 &#8211; 16 minutes in 425F oven, until lightly golden browned.<br \/>\nWhile scones are baking, lay down two strips of \u00a0wax paper, plastic wrap and place cooling racks onto it; this will make your clean up so much easier when you do the final two steps.<br \/>\nRemove from oven, transfer scones to wire rack to cool.<br \/>\nWhile scones are cooling (about 15 minutes) in small bowl combine first amount of icing sugar, vanilla and milk, stirring until smooth.<br \/>\nUse a pastry brush to brush a layer of glaze onto each scone.<\/p>\n<p>In a small bowl combine icing sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger.<br \/>\nAdd vanilla and enough milk resulting in a thicker glaze (the consistency of mayo or ketchup)<br \/>\nLoad the thick glaze into a piping bag or a sandwich bag with a corner snipped off.<br \/>\nPipe lines of thick glaze over the first layer of glaze.<\/p>\n<p>Yield: about 18 &#8211; 24 Scones, depending on what size you make them<\/p>\n<p>This recipe adapted from:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.recipegirl.com\/2011\/10\/27\/starbucks-pumpkin-scones\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Recipe Girl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The class I work in at school went to the pumpkin patch before Halloween.
